It has been 1 year, 5 months and 8 days since Rugby was played at Redditch RFC and it was no wonder that the boys were up for it.

After practising with clean hands, freshly washed balls, and a distinct lack of bodily contact August 7th was the day when we could return to full on, full contact Rugby.

Following the heavy rain during the week the pitch was perfect for fast open rugby and Garry Is to be congratulated for keeping it looking like a rugby pitch for all that time.

Of course, there were a host of new laws to be considered and Referee James Shanahan patiently explained them despite the attentions of “scrum half” Loran who asked all the questions a hooker would ask about scrum feeds.

Resplendent in the blue and pink anniversary kits the two teams went for it from the start.

The score of 39-7 to the blue team did not reflect the closeness of the match as the pinks probably shaded in the scrum but could not find the final scoring pass.

Along the way Josh showed that he is not the easiest man to tackle with some fine runs mixing finesse and brute strength.

TK was his normal difficult self with some immense tackles and fast running. His game gets better every match.

The front rows chatted amiably throughout the match with Loran leading the conversation and only once being pulled up for “helping” Fat Baby with his lineout throw.

Mickey Jarret and Garry Mills showed the age shall not weary them with Garry skipping in for a fine try.

It was pleasing to see Nathan Marthews, Mikey Adams and Ollie Stokes back down at Redditch, whilst 1st team stalwarts from last season Stu Brooks, Matt Allen, James Mills, Mikey Essex looked sharp all day.

And after all the fuss there was not one opportunity for anyone to take advantage of the new laws despite James Mills having several attempts at the 50/22 kick.

So next week it is over to Warley to meet the first real life opposition. Stu Hope has arranged fixtures every week until the season starts so it is a great opportunity for everyone to get in some game time before the season proper.
