The Queenfishers headed off to Five Ways Old Edwardians for the first tournament of the season expecting to get very wet after early morning showers.
However they tapped off against hosts Five Ways Falcons in bright sunshine.
Christine found an early break and scooted the length of the field to score the opening try.
However Redditch were not going to get it all their own way as Five Ways tightened up their defence and started to mount some attacks of their own. The Redditch girls were working very hard in defence and the unseasonably warm weather and the amount of running they were doing started to take its toll. However subs were made and recovery was quick and they continued to hold out with some great last gasp try saving defence.
Five Ways were sufferring just as much and eventually the gaps appeared for Redditch to run in two more nice tries.
Next came Rugby St Andrews who put up a much sterner test. However Redditch seemed to have mastered the drive up the centre and the return pass to the dummy half resulted in Charlie scoring three well worked tries. Sadly Christine managed to pop a hamstring as she was racing down the touch line causing her to retire for the day. The girls from Redditch found it tough in the warm conditions but held on for a well earned 4-3 victory.
The last match was against a very serious looking Camp Hill outfit, who generously lent Redditch a player, to even up the sides at 10 a piece. Redditch's main strength was their ability to keep possession for long periods of time, whereas Camp Hill squandered theirs, to the point that Redditch were well in the match at half time. However, despite some well chosen words from coach Garry, the speed and fitness of the Camp Hill squad eventually started to tell and gaps appeared in the Queen's defence. They were not disgraced by the final score of 3-0 to the eventual tournament winners.
Thanks to Five Ways for a well organised and enjoyable tournament and congratulations to the Queenfishers for a creditable 2nd place.
Meanwhile Revolution Touch returns to Bromsgrove Road on Saturday Afternoon, whilst Redditch Cricket Club hosts Old Elizabethans.
Let's hope for fine weather as we enjoy the last weekend of compulsory outdoor drinking!
