Redditch fell short again on Saturday against a well drilled experienced Malvern squad. A ten minute spell in the first half determined the result of the match but throughout the the remainder of the game R were a match for their hosts. It was a very scrappy start to the game with errors from both sides, the advantage law was played to it's limit which made for a hectic but entertaining first quarter. However, once M found their passes and an overlap on the right wing the first try was scored with relative ease under the posts.
An innocuous clearance kick bounced wickedly to deceive the R full back and a second try resulted, soon to be followed by a third, a reward for fine support play through the middle of the pitch.
R were battling well up front, heads didn't drop, The Allen Brothers maintained forward momentum, Joe Looker and Mitch Ferris kept the opposition quiet with solid tackling, Aaron Atkinson in the centre was a live wire in attack and defence leading his side by example.
R got their little share of good luck when another bounce of the ball fell their way, the Allens combined to give Matt his first try converted by Will Spires. However two late team tries for Malvern before half time settled the result with the home side 35-7 up at the break.
R used the conditions perfectly in the second half, with a breeze at their backs they kicked wisely, kept the ball tight when it was needed and ended up winning the second half 12-7 . A quick tap penalty try from Ferris and late drive from Player of the Match Matt Allen were a fine reward for some enterprising play.
There were more positives in this performance than of late, it is beginning to click and R look forward to taking these improvements into their next game away to Droitwich II on Saturday
Man of the match Matt Allen on a typical burst though not in this match!
