Redditch RFC

15 - 22

(HT 0-0)

Keresley RFC

Keresley had some immense forwards and speedy backs, and running down the hill in the first half soon had Redditch defending their line.

They held out for a while before the big visiting pack trundled over to take the lead by 7 to nil.

However Redditch were full of running up the hill and with winger Harry Irvine following up the kicks aggressively Stu Brooks showed good speed up the hill to snare the first try.

From the kick off the same players repeated the exercise before Clarke Parker showed off his circus skills to juggle the ball before touching down for yet another try this season.

With the score at 10-7 Keresley, once again, took advantage of the slope to play near Redditch's line before crashing over for their second try to retake the lead.

Redditch continued to play with flair and spirit up the hill with Joe Looker running in their third try.

Both teams received yellow cards as the half closed out with players taking one for the team to prevent try scoring opportunities.

The sceond half was an attritional affair with Redditch forced to defend for long periods. That said stand off Elliot Williams and centre Jack Mertens made clean breaks only to lack support at the final hurdle.

Keresley took the opportunity presented to convert a penalty chance and bring the score to 15 each with the threat of extra time loomimg.

Redditch took the ball right to the Keresley goal line in an effort to close out the game, but the defence held solid enabling the visitors to work their way back up the field.

And so it remained until the final seconds of the game when Keresley had capitalised on Redditch errors to once again reach the top of the hill.

They took their chance as the big forwards once aginn outmuscled the tiring Redditch 8 to cross for the deciding try. The conversion ended proceedings with the visitors taking the match by 22 points to 15.

Man of the match went to Jack Mertens for his stong running and leading the defensive line in an effective and aggressive manner.

This was a good hit out for Redditch and gives coaches Tom and Stu plenty to work on before we take on Kings Norton, at home, on 4th October.
