Redditch RFC

33 - 34

(HT 14-17)

Worcester RFC

Having started their previous match against Worcester with just 14 players, Redditch had fallen way behind in the first half and given the home side a match winning head start.

So, with a full complement of reserves Redditch were hopeful of carrying on from the previous meeting’s second half which Redditch lost by 17-14.

However, Worcester scooped up a Redditch knock on to score under the posts in the second minute of the match. They capitalised on another Redditch handling error to score again from the kick off.

Redditch settled down and held their own until they switched off allowing Worcester to take a quick lineout throw and score the softest of tries. 0-17 was not looking good for the home side and starting to remind them of their previous meeting.

Worcester backs continued to throw the ball around but the home side defended grimly until a turnover allowed Redditch to score under the posts. The play continued in much the same vein until Matt Allen crashed over after another impressive forward drive, to take the half time score to 14-17.

Redditch opened the scoring in the second half to lead by 19-17.

Worcester responded with a try and Redditch answered with a converted try to retake the lead.

And, on 33 minutes, in a replay of their last meeting Harvey Habgood took a fabulous intercept to score under the posts taking the home side to a heady 33-22 lead over their high flying visitors with just seven minutes to go.

This seven minutes was to be the longest in history, as Worcester scored again on 42 minute reducing the lead to 6 points.

During that nominal 7 minutes Redditch gave away 8 penalties and a yellow card whilst missing a penalty of their own which would have sealed the game.

However, it was not to be as, on 47 minutes, Worcester scored again, reducing the margin to 1 point. To the delight of the visiting supporters the conversion was kicked, saving their blushes, and consigning the home side to a 2 bonus point loss against the 2nd placed team in the league.

Hopefully they can go one better next week when they visit near neighbours Bromsgrove with a 3:00pm kick off.
