Redditch arrived at Malvern to take on their high flying 2nd team only to find that a late cry off left them with just 14 players.
A man down, Redditch started brightly pushing the home side back with well taken penalties. A good break from Full back Rory Allen saw him brought down short of the line with the ball turned over. This resulted in a long range run from Malvern to score under the posts.
This seemed to unsettle Redditch and they got onto the wrong side of the referee, disagreeing with his interpretation of tackle height. A further Malvern try to the score to 12-0.
5 minutes later a 3rd high tackle resulted in a yellow card putting further pressure on the visitors.
The Yellow Card disrupted the Redditch defence and Malvern scored to further tries before Redditch returned to their full complement.
Redditch mounted several attacks with the best midfield break called back for a forward pass, but the defence held to the end of the half with Malvern leading by 29-0 at half time.
A strong half time team talk urged the Redditch players to listen to the referee resulting in just 3 penalties and a mysterious yellow card in the second half. After sixteen minutes Malvern once again took advantage of the yellow card advantage to take the score to 36-0.
But for the last quarter Redditch played their hearts out putting great pressure on the Malvern line. Eventually Jack Mehrtens crashed over for a try. And there was more to come as Jack repeated his efforts to take the final score to 36-12 and give Redditch the satisfaction of winning the second half.
Redditch can be well satisfied with their performance whilst playing large parts of the match with as few as 12 players.
Sadly injuries to Matt Barnett, Jay Thomas and Jon Beale will put further pressure on selection for their next match at home to Chaddesley Corbett on 6th December with kick off at 2:15pm.
Man of the match went to Jack Mehrtens for his consistent tackling and scoring two tries.
