Redditch travelled to Worcester and pre-match warmed up enthusiastically in ideal conditions.
However, things started to go wrong as two players failed to turn up because of sudden work commitments, whilst 2 others indicated that they would only appear in time for the second half after Worcester generously agreed to delay the kick off.
With stalwart Garry Mills stepping up Redditch eventually took the field with just 14 players.
That said they started brightly, and aided by some penalties against Worcester opened the scoring with a well taken forwards try by Matt Allen. Elliot Williams failed to convert from wide out on the left.
However it wasn’t long before a speculative kick by Worcester resulted in a wicked bounce which eluded 2 Redditch players to fall into the arms of the chasing Worcester player who scored between the posts to make the score 7-5.
Then on 15 minutes Redditch gave away their first penalty of the game. The ball was turned over and Worcester ran in their second try.
With 14 v 15 Redditch were visibly tiring with Worcester repeatedly being first to the ball and enjoying long periods of possession. Tries came thick and fast to take the half time score to 29-5
But as the cavalry arrived for Redditch they were able to approach the second half with 2 fresh players and a full complement.
Once again Redditch started brightly and Matt Allen finished an excellent move where many players were involved, This time Elliot converted to take the score to 29-12.
Worcester’s backs were in excellent form throwing the ball around with speed and precision. Redditch defended manfully until two quick tries seemed to seal the contest for Worcester.
But Redditch were not done as Harvey Habgood took an intercept, showing the defence a clean pair of heels, to score adjacent to the posts. Elliot Williams converted.
Redditch then enjoyed their best possession of the game and pounded the home side line in search of a bonus point try.
However it was not to be and Worcester had the final say as a charge down by fullback Rory Allen bounced back into the hands of the kicker and in a moment the final score was created against the run of play to make the final score 46-19 with the second half just edged by Worcester by 17-14,
Our next match is at home to Bromsgrove 3rd on November 22nd with kick off at 2:15pm.
