Redditch RFC

22 - 45

(HT 5-21)

Birmingham Exiles RFC
Redditch were out muscled by a bigger pack and came off second best in this entertaining encounter. Cumulative pressure in the home 22 resulted in the first try for BE, eventually finding a hole in the resolute R back line.  Penalties gave BE more opportunities to score which they took with both hands resulting in a 0-21 lead in even time. It looked ominous.
Yet R found another gear, keeping the ball away from the packs when possible the played to the spaces. a qick tap on the half way fed the ever active Mickey Adams who fed Mike Allen then hooker Aaron Atkinson who sprinted the remaining 40 m to score  to close the gap at the break to 5-21.
The second half saw R fired up, a long kick to touch from James Mills  gave them territory, a fine catch a drive surprised the BE pack and Joe Purvis finished off the drive with a well taken score.
BE bounced straight back and over the next quarter of the game ran in three more tries through their forward drives and neat chip kick to the winger.
R could have collapsed completely but driven on by skipper Will Spires they were inspired to greater heights. A repeat kick to touch and line out drive was this time rewarded with Mickey Adams bustling his way over the line, and to salvage a try scoring bonus point the back line linked sweetly freeing up winger Joe Morgan who outsprinted the defence to score their fourth, converted by WS.
A late try from BE snubbed out any lingering hopes of a dramatic fightback.
This Sat sees then visit Evesham for the rearranged fixture.
