Redditch RFC

27 - 21

(HT 17-14)

Kidderminster Carolians RFC
R regained that winning feeling on Sat when they overcame a high flying K side with a performance that had been coming for weeks but hadn't quite seen them over the line.
Recently against Old Halesonians they came within minutes of an away win but this time their solid defence saw them through to the end to gain 5 valuable league points.
Playing in their changed strip of pink the R pack was dominant throughout, a driving maul from a penalty in the K 22 was the key to the opening try for Stu Brookes. it proved instrumental for the second try too when the visitors were pushed back 20m eventually giving the platform for James Mills to dive over a pile of bodies to score, Will Spires converting for a 12- 0 lead.
K were shaken into action, using their fast wings they ran in two tries in response both converted, to turn the game around and take the lead though their pick remained under constant pressure.
The R defensive line was constantly up in the faces of their guests, forcing errors and dropped balls, one of which was capitalised upon by Brookes who hoofed the ball down field, the full back was harried into errors, the ball was won back and sped along the line for Clarke Parker to score out wide and take R to the break with a 17. 14 lead.
The second half continued in a similar vein, the R pack remained dominant and with their backs nullifying the K attacks it became a battlefield mid pitch with neither side having much in the way of scoring opportunities until another break from Brookes rounded off clinical handling display from the entire R side.
K were not done and fought back to score their third converted try virtually directly from the kick off taking the game into the final phase 22-21.  Rory Allen made a try saving tackle chasing down a breakaway and was ably assisted by TK to clear the danger. With a the much needed win in their sights, R pulled out all the stops and defended bravely, and were eventually rewarded with SB rounding off another inspired piece of attacking rugby to extent the lead.
The final few minutes were tense, a few injuries had delayed the game so no one was quite sure when it would end. K threw everything into the search for a last minute winner but the home defence stood firm  and held out for a well deserved victory.
Next Sat take the short trip to Hopwood to play Five Ways OE
