R again came up against a set of speedy backs and struggled to contain them. The home pack was dominant once more using the drives and mauls to gain territory but found the final pass going astray. S capitalised on the opportunities and used their wingers to a greater extent and ran in two tries in the opening quarter to establish a 0-14 lead.
There had been some changes to the home pack but that didn't affect their effectiveness in disrupting the opposition ball and pushing them back at every opportunity. A series of penalties deep in the S half were eventually capital ise dupon when Dan Oscroft powered his way to the line, Will Spires converting to bring the game with one score at the break.
The second half saw R maintain their momentum and they were rewarded when Jon Beale finished off a swift handling move to bring them right back into the game. But despite their determination and territorial advantages they were unable to break down a resolute S defensive line.
S themselves had three chances to score and took them all to give them a flattering score line, a deserved win but not by that amount.
On the plus side, Jon Beale moving to wing forward will give selectors some difficult decisions to make when the squad is back to full availability. Player of the match Kyle Allen showed great promise on his first 1st team start. Rory Allen at fullback made some important tackles and the pack as a whole kept up the spirited fight to the end.
Next game will be at Birmingham Exiles this Sat 3pm
