Five Ways Old Edwardians FC

5 - 14

(HT 0-14)

Redditch RFC
This game will not go down in the annuls of history as the most exciting, tense, skill filled game of rugby, but both sides gave 100% and ran themselves into the ground. However for every highlight there was a fumble, a dropped ball or, more frequently, an injury.
The result was a very disjointed affair when neither side could build any momentum or consistency.
R dominated the scrums from the outset, a solid push gave them the upper hand which came to the fore following a deep kick from Archie Beddard resulted in a 5m scrum to the home side. The R powerhouse steamrollered the Five Ways pack backwards allowing no 8 Nathan Marthews to touchdown. AB converted.
R picked up the tempo a little in a bid to finish the game off early on, the door was constantly closed for them as FW tackled well and deprived R of any quick ball to play with. In the end it was a piece of magic from Will Heath that extended the score line, his delicate grubber kick split the defensive line enabling him to dive on the bouncing ball under the sticks to give AB an easy kick to convert.
For the next hour the game  remained scoreless, attacks from both sides were repelled, rarely was either try line threatened. Injuries to both sides disrupted the flow of the game. Some enthusiastic tackles kept the referee on his toes and some strange decisions from him muted the R dominance in the scrums. R were frustrated by their own inability to capitalise on their possession and FW countered when ever they could, never giving up the game resulting in a fine wingers try deep into the second half.
